Director of Sustainability, Compliance & Safety

Summary:

The Director of Sustainability Compliance & Safety directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive environmental, safety, health and customer compliance programs of all U.S. Operations, including programs, policies, and procedures that are compliant and promote continuous improvement. The Director of Compliance & Safety provides the leadership, direction, and support necessary to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations/standards, and customer compliance obligations in order to provide a safe work environment and ensure a stable production environment.

Job Duties:

  • Manages the direction and execution of all safety programs and provides direction, training, and leadership to the Safety Committee and Safety Champion at each plant.
  • Conducts safety training and awareness sessions for Tegra employees and ensures training is delivered and documented on an ongoing basis. Designs the safety training curriculum and ensures it is updated regularly.
  • Continuously drives improvement in health and safety measures and leads Safety related Kaizen events.
  • Ensures work hazard analysis is completed for each position.
  • Assists in preparing required plans and appropriate facility operating procedures or checklists.
  • Serves as facility contact for federal, state and regional health and safety agencies.
  • Responsible for customer compliance standards and acts as the lead/point of contact for all customer onsite plant audits. Owns audit remediation plans and conducts pre-audits several times per year to ensure readiness. Develops processes and metrics for ongoing compliance monitoring.
  • Facilitates emergency response protocols.
  • Participates in accident investigations, performs root cause analysis for all injuries and “near misses”; trains operations supervisors to conduct thorough investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Maintains knowledge of all applicable corporate, federal, state and local health and safety regulatory requirements. Stays abreast of developing regulatory requirements, particularly on a state and local level. Keep operations informed of new and developing regulations.
  • Working with facility Maintenance Department reports data and tracks all environmental metrics.
  • In partnership with production management, advises and implements recycling & waste, energy, and water reduction initiatives.
  • Provides leadership in sustainability initiatives and partners with customer SME’s to drive continuous improvement. Represents Tegra at global conferences on sustainability topics and on key customer engagements.
  • In partnership with production management and HR, assists with community engagement events.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations and their state equivalents as well as other applicable industry environmental, health and safety standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop all facets of a successful and sustainable safety program.
  • Proficiency in conducting safety investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage federal, state and local regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and thoroughly audit facilities as well as assist in addressing audit findings.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage OSHA recordkeeping, environmental and H&S metrics.
  • Proven teamwork skills with demonstrated abilities to work collaboratively and to influence those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exists.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving techniques and quantitative, analytical skills.
  • Strong decision-making skills and attentive to details, work well under pressure and able to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work at all levels of the organization and with people of various backgrounds, experience, and education levels.
  • Ability to organize and manage a complex workload and projects in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office

 

Education/Certification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational / Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, Emergency Management or related field.
  • Experience working in apparel manufacturing strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years’ practical experience with health and safety compliance at a large global company with world-class safety programs.
  • Certification in an EH&S related discipline and/or further education is a plus.

 

Work Environment

  • This position may require working extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, to respond to incidents or as otherwise needed.
  • This position works in a dynamic production environment and requires the ability to walk and work in all parts of the distribution warehouse and outside during all weather conditions, as necessary to perform the function of the role.
