Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Lehigh Hanson is seeking a qualified Director of Environmental, Safety & Health (ESH) for its West Region operations.  This position reports directly to the President of the West Region with a functional accountability to the VP ESH for Lehigh Hanson.  The role will be based in San Ramon,CA. 
 
This position will be responsible for strategic development and leadership of the organization’s environmental, safety and health programs and initiatives for the West Region. The role will direct and coordinate ESH activities to ensure alignment with Lehigh Hanson and Heidelberg Cement ESH directives and programs and compliance with environmental, safety and health laws and regulations.  The position will provide leadership and guidance to the Environmental Managers and Safety and Health Managers in strong and effective collaboration with operational leaders and the Lehigh Hanson Corporate ESH team.

What you’ll get to do: 

  • Collaborates with ESH professionals and operational leadership to establish, develop, and maintain Lehigh Hanson’s ESH performance standards and specifications.
  • Coaches and mentors operations leaders and ESH professionals in the tools, programs and requirements of the Company’s ESH programs.
  • Stays apprised of emerging ESH issues including legislative, regulatory, etc., and communicates accordingly with Corporate and business line managers; communications will often include recommendations of actions the Company should take as a result of these emerging issues.
  • Assists in the development of Company ESH procedures, standards, and programs.
  • Where appropriate, coordinates the investigation, response and correction of significant safety events such as fatalities, serious injury or illness and regulatory action requirements.
  • Maintains, monitors, and ensures consistency with the Company’s ESH management database and systems.
  • Leads and coordinates efforts to continuously improve Company ESH performance, protocols, procedures and tools.
  • Provide effective leadership and guidance for the management of the Regions’ environmental, safety and health programs and requirements.
  • Other duties and tasks, including travel, as necessary and/or assigned to effectively carry out job responsibilities and maximize the effectiveness of this role.
     

Who we are looking for: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety management, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational environment health and safety, or a related field.  A master's degree is preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is required. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of industrial safety management and/or environmental management. Operational experience is preferred.
  • Expertise in Federal (EPA), State and local environmental regulations and procedures.
  • Strong and effective experience in developing, implementing and managing ESH programs across multiple sites.
  • Strong leadership, communication and influencing skills at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Federal, State ESH regulations and procedures.
  • Expertise in developing, implementing and maintaining ESH management systems and programs.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to form, facilitate and maintain internal and cross functional teams.
  • Experience and ability to coach operational and ESH leaders.
  • Proven ability to communicate and influence internal and external stakeholders including regulators, industry organizations and Company stakeholders.
