Corporate Global Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Director

Position Summary: 
Responsible for leading the environmental, health and safety (EHS) program across global manufacturing sites, R&D centers, global offices, and the extended value chain. Provide strategic direction on EHS issues.  Lead the Responsible Care® and Actively Caring initiatives.  This position will manage 4 direct and 10 indirect reports.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and deploy strategic initiatives that reduce/eliminate risk, continually improve EHS performance, and reduce incidents.
  • Lead a high-impact, metric-based global EHS program that is embraced by the organization.
  • Establish EHS program direction and priorities, plan and direct enhancements or modifications as required. 
  • Ensure EHS management and governance processes/systems are in place to reduce EHS risk in accordance with applicable regulations, industry standards, and best practices. 
  • Advise management on high risk EHS issues and effectively work with company and business leaders in crafting solutions for resolving gaps.
  • Track regulatory reforms and conduct on-going risk analyses to identify emerging EHS risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Promote knowledge transfer through best practice sharing, mentoring and training.
  • Hire, coach, develop, and manage direct and indirect reports - setting goals and priorities accordingly.  Lead EHS Leadership Council. Assess performance and provide ongoing feedback and coaching.
  • Lead EHS due diligence reviews for acquisitions, mergers, divestitures and globalization activities. Develop and implement EHS integration plan(s) for new facilities and businesses. 
  • Represent organization in industry EHS associations

Education and experience required: 

  • BS degree in relevant technical field such as Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Safety, or equivalent is required. Advanced degree in relevant science or engineering field  strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience with at least 10 years of current/very recent, direct EHS experience leading and managing, from a corporate executive level, international EHS program implementation and solutions in global multi-site environment is required. 
  • Strong EHS "hands on" technical experience is required.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, manage, and continuously improve sustainable EHS programs and EHS management systems (not just maintain). 
  • Strong and demonstrable experience and success in developing, coaching, and leading teams in a matrix environment is required.
  • Strong preference for experience in the chemical or petrochemical industry(s).
  • CHMM, CIH, or CSP professional certification preferred.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt/Lean Expert certification preferred.
