Associate Safety & Hazemat Specialist

We’re looking for a motivated Safety Associate to assist in the management of corporate safety and dangerous goods activities throughout the U.S. and Canada. This includes supporting the implementation and maintenance of company policies and adhering to local, state and federal environmental health and safety regulations.

  • Administers Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) policies and programs outlined by U.S. and Canadian federal, state and provincial regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, DOT, Ministries of Labor, Transportation & Environment). Remains current on these regulations and develops new manuals, policies and procedures to remain complaint with regulation changes.
  • Acts as company liaison for government inspectors and insurance representatives, along with the corporate safety manager, coordinating all regulatory inspections, maintaining all pertinent regulatory records and ensuring files comply with requirements. 
  • Implements written EHS programs and company safety policies aligned with federal and state / provincial requirements.
  • Articulates the safety vision and plan to achieve this vision, effectively communicating our health and safety goals, objectives, performance expectations and metrics throughout the organization. 
  • Administers safety program audits to ensure compliance with company policies and regulations. Inspects safety facilities, machinery and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards to ensure safety regulation compliance. 
  • Ensures appropriate risk/hazard assessments are conducted and corresponding follow-ups are implemented. Minimizes and/or eliminates incidents that have the potential to cause harm to one of the company’s employees, contractors or visitors. 
  • Provides strategies for improving safety performance, reviewing all statistics, especially worker’s compensation claims, to identify safety concerns and prioritize areas of immediate concern. 
  • Ensures timely investigation of all work-related incidents. In partnership with Human Resources, identifies opportunities for improved safety performance and cost reduction. Utilizes known root-cause-analysis techniques and provides guidance to prevent injury recurrence. Ensures corrective action has been implemented. Shares learning opportunities across all sites. 
  • Works closely with company leaders in the investigation and training of employees involved in safety-related activities. Develops and provides safety performance metrics. 
  • Develops, maintains and may deliver EHS training programs in areas of safety, regulations, hazardous condition monitoring and use of safety equipment. 
  • Maintains presence throughout company to ensure open safety communication with all employees. Acts as an advisor to company’s safety committee. Supports the development of technical safety skills for employees.
  • Helps manage our dangerous goods (DG) transportation, which ensures the compliant and safe transport of our products. 
  • Acts as the company’s primary DG subject matter expert, providing guidance and support to company personnel to ensure regulatory compliance. This includes remaining up-to-date on regulatory changes. 
  • Develops, documents and implements the company’s internal DG program, policies and standard operation procedures. 
  • Maintains classification of DG products, obtaining any required special permits and other required documentation. 
  • Trains employees on DG requirements, policies and procedures, including coordinating certification for company personnel who handle dangerous goods.  
  • Manages the response and reporting of DG incidents to appropriate authorities and company management. 
  • Maintains certification in DG requirements for DOT, ICAO/IATA, IMDG/IMO, and TDG (Transport of Dangerous Goods – Canada).
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • BA/BS degree in safety, environmental health and safety (EHS), industrial hygiene, business, occupational health, science, engineering or a related discipline, plus one year of experience in a safety environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • OSH 10- or 30-hour (General Industry) or “Advanced Safety Certification” or “Principles of Safety & Health” (POSH) from the National Safety Council, Hazardous Materials Manager Certification or other safety certificates are a plus, as well as knowledge of OSHA, DOT and other applicable safety policies and best practices. 
  • Displays a high-level of enthusiasm for safety.

  • Maintains composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Self-motivated, with critical attention to details and deadlines.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, working across all levels of an organization; keen presentation skills and meeting-facilitation skills. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
