Assistant Director, EHS

The Assistant Director, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) serves as the primary Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) point of contact for storage and disposal of chemicals. Oversees and maintains programs, systems and controls to better monitor and report on all hazardous chemical types, amounts and locations as such may be required by various regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversees Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) lab safety programs, systems and controls to better monitor and report on EH&S issues required by various federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
  • Leads the EH&S Lab Safety Unit and provides support in the areas of team development and mentoring.
  • Manages, communicates and maintains appropriate quality control systems to inspect, monitor, and manage all labs and hazardous material storage areas, working closely with building managers, project managers, lab personnel, and/or contractors as needed.
  • Conducts incident investigations, implements corrective actions, tracks progress to completion and develops reports as required; coordinates with EH&S subject matter experts as necessary.
  • Coordinates with regulatory agencies to assure timely reporting, tracking the status of corrective action items for regulatory compliance, implementation of corrective action plans, and timely notification to the EH&S Director regarding conditions of non-conformance/compliance.
  • Provides operational compliance oversight in collaboration with Office of Research in all maters related to bio safety, chemical safety, nano-safety, laser safety, radiation safety, laboratory safety, environmental compliance and enforces corrective and actions for non-compliance.
  • Reviews research protocols and operational procedures to correct any unsafe lab procedure or hazardous material/equipment use, storage, or disposal
  • Manages all aspects of the FIU controlled substances compliance program (meeting coordination, purchase and use approval, disposal oversight, and inspections) in compliance with the terms and conditions of all applicable licenses and regulations.
  • Develops and maintains close and cooperative communication and working relationships with the Office of Research, all Academic units and Support functions with the institution.
  • Serves as a member of the Employee Safety Committee and an alternate on the University EOC.
  • Participates as a member of the EH&S 24-hour Emergency Response Team and meets all necessary obligations to respond to environmental, biological, radiological or chemical release or contamination emergencies during nonbusiness hours
  • Evaluates contracts, leases, MOUs, research proposals, purchase procedures, and similar documents to identify exposures and potential risks as it relates to environmental compliance, health and safety.
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with all regulatory permits (waste, radiation, and environmental)
  • Provides EH&S representation at campus and compliance meetings as a professional EH&S resource and liaison.
  • Reviews and approves all lab-related Person of Interest (POI), volunteer, and access requests in collaboration with Office of Research.
  • Oversees contracts for professional and technical services relating to environmental, safety, and health projects in collaboration with EH&S subject matter experts, Office of General Counsel, and Procurement
  • Coordinates lab safety webinars, seminars, events, and trainings to educate the university community and promote a culture of safety.
  • Assists in preparing the EH&S budget, including tracking and controlling all expenditures within assigned budget area of responsibility.
  • Identifies, evaluates, recommends and implements University policies, departmental work procedures and industry best practices to assure awareness of, and compliance with all appropriate chemical, environmental, biological, radiological & use requirements and appropriate waste management.
  • Issues Cease To Operate or Emergency Lab Closure as necessary to protect students, faculty and staff in consultation with the Office of Research & Economic Development (ORED).
  • Identifies opportunities and applies for county, state, federal, and private grants relating to chemical, radiological, biological safety, equipment, training and emergency preparedness.
  • Prepares and submits high level reports as required by University Compliance, federal and state and local regulatory agencies.
  • Serves as backup for the Director of Environmental Healthy & Safety as needed or requested.

 

Minimum Qualification:

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and six (6) years of appropriate experience or Master's degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of appropriate experience .

 

Department Requirements:

  • Prior work experience in a university or academic setting.
  • Prior work experience as an Environmental Health & Safety Officer or similar position.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Four years of experience as a supervisor.
  • Basic understanding of general lab safety, chemical safety, Bio-safety, radiation safety and environmental compliance regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of controlled substances compliance requirements.
  • Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency (HAZWOPER) Certified
  • Experience in safety and environmental process development, evaluation, and implementation

 

Advertised Salary:

  • $70,000 - $75,000, salary commensurate with experience.

  • On call 24 hour by 7 day for possible emergency situations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
