Area Safety (EHS) Manager

Scope of the Position:
Responsible for consistency in the design, implementation, and coordination of the occupational health, safety, and loss control management system in BSD Region, in alignment with the Oldcastle Precast national platform. Work with all level of employees to ensure safety goals are reached, which will be achieved through effective process management, communication and team work.  

Work with the Regional Market Area Management team to ensure implementation and ongoing improvement of safety and health processes and systems consistent with Oldcastle priorities and policies as well as compliance with relevant regulations.  Serve as a catalyst and expert resource to promote and develop a proactive safety culture within each organization.  The Safety Manager will provide strong leadership in safety and health within the Oldcastle Precast system.


  • Serve as an expert resource for local management regarding safety and health processes and regulations
  • Advise and assist local management in implementing, managing, and auditing Health and Safety Management Systems
  • Ensure site management, site safety representatives, and site inspection representatives are adequately trained for the performance of their tasks
  • Work with other Area Safety Managers and VP of EHS to identify system, program, and training needs within the region
  • Provide expertise for investigations of health and safety concerns and incidents, development of corrective actions and follow-up mechanisms, and ensure communication of relevant information to all employees
  • Lead worker’s compensation case management and return to work with local management and insurance company
  • Ensure timely reporting and claims management for workers’ compensation, general liability and automotive liability
  • Share lessons learned (incident investigations) and best practices with the regional and product line personnel
  • Coordinate health and Industrial Hygiene monitoring with insurance risk control services
  • Analyze and effectively communicate trends in product line incident/injury data to evaluate current programs and work toward continuous improvement in those areas
  • Make a strong contribution as a team player and promote active leadership for safety and health initiatives
  • Develop and maintain a positive and constructive relationship with Local Management and Plant teams, as well as applicable regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, DEP, etc.)
Relationships with Other Jobs: 

  • Direct reporting line to Regional Operations General Manager
  • Work with VP of EHS in determining national initiatives and developing policies/procedures
  • Work with Product Line Management and plant/site employees on implementation of Health and Safety Management Systems, processes, and training

Specific Accountabilities: 

  • Assure utilization of established systems by the product line to assist in minimizing incidents
  • Provides expertise on all safety and industrial hygiene issues related to 1910 & 1926.
  • Assists with D.O.T. compliance issues related to trucking operations.
  • Assure product line compliance with Oldcastle Safety Policy
  • Coordinates annual safety audit program.
  • Implements corporate safety initiatives
  • Ensures proper recordkeeping practices with the company’s Health & Safety Management System.
  • Provides oversight for all claims related to workers’ compensation, auto, and general liability.

Qualification Profile: 

  • Education preferred:  College degree (Occupational Safety or Risk Management) or equivalent experience
  • Experienced preferred:  5-10 years related experience in construction materials industry
  • Nationally recognized Safety and Health certifications preferred (CSP, ARM, OHST, CHST)
  • Excellent Communication skills, verbal and written
  • Preferred computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
  • Expert knowledge of OSHA 1910/1926 regulations
  • Timely and sound decision-making skills
  • Good business focus, ability to interact with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to drive change, innovation, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Proven track record of adding value through safety and health programs.
