Sr. EHS Specialist - Biosafety

The Sr. EHS Specialist - Biosafety is responsible for leading lab safety programs at our Tarrytown, NY headquarters. In this fast paced role, you will anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control personnel exposures to biological and chemical hazards in our research laboratories. Additionally, you will lead EH&S programs for our small-rodent vivarium, ensuring a safe work environment, while identifying and minimizing potential risks and hazards.

Responsibilities:

  • Implements environmental health and safety programs and initiatives, focusing on the lab and vivarium environments
  • Supervise and prioritize tasks for first line EHS staff member(s)
  • Assist EHS Director with regulatory issues as necessary
  • Supervise and perform industrial hygiene monitoring of laboratory and support personnel to interpret data and determine potential exposure to hazardous chemicals. Ensure completeness of data
  • Responsible for accident rate remediation. Completes accident reports, conducts accident investigations and investigates trends and adjusts department responses accordingly
  • Maintain and update the OSHA 300 log and complete year end reporting summary
  • In charge of inspection, collection, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, chemical and radioactive waste. Responsible for waste minimization and assurance of proper disposal practices
  • Supervise and perform EHS inspections of labs and offices
  • Participate in and promote staff professional development training and activities
  • Responsible for the communication, training and management of lab safety contacts
  • Provide support to ergonomics program by acting as liaison for the Travelers Ergonomist

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required. Master's degree or certifications (Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience in environmental health and safety, preferably in a laboratory environment within a pharmaceutical company or biotech
  • Minimum of 5 years of lab and biosafety experience required
  • Must be able to compose clear and concise written communications without error or omission. Must be able to verbally communicate with a wide range of people in a clear, concise manner.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks, anticipate outcomes, and act accordingly
  • Must have experience working with computers, air-monitoring equipment, fit testing equipment, noise dosimetry and respiratory protection equipment
  • This position will require the individual to pass a physical before beginning employment
