Senior Safety Manager

Summary of position:
The Senior Safety Manager (SSM) is responsible for the implementation and communication of safety compliance initiatives at Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC).  The SSM will help SMBSC reach its mission by providing safety leadership through (1) managing current safety programs, policies and procedures and (2) improving safety performance through communication, education, and performance management.

Essential Functions:
Policy, Procedure and Program Implementation:

  • Assists to identify best practices and leads continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices
  • Monitors and evaluates construction and renovation projects to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and company policies
  • Directs and evaluates SMBSC employee safety programs to determine their adequacy, including review of short and long term strategic safety planning and development
  • Manages Renville Site OSHA 300 Log and regulatory correspondence

Incident Investigation and Data Analysis: 

  • Performs safety audits and inspects facilities, equipment, machinery, work conditions, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensures regulatory compliance for safety
  • Investigates all types of incidents including: near-miss, property damage, and occupational injuries, to determine causes and install preventive measures
  • Analyzes trends through root cause analysis to identify causation and risk factors to identify corrective or preventative action measures

Training and Development:

  • Conducts and coordinates employee training in areas, such as: safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment, including new hire orientation as well as semi-annual and annual safety trainings
  • Coordinates disaster drills to ensure readiness
  • Provides technical advice, coaching, guidance, and monitoring to employees on safety initiatives and necessary changes
  • Addresses, investigates, and follows up with employee safety concerns in a timely manner; communicates results of the findings and implements necessary changes when needed
     

Employee Management:

  • Develops and mentors SMBSC’s Safety Department employees, which includes:  providing resources to increase individual knowledge, conducting regular reviews evaluating performance, working with employees to mitigate opportunities for improvement, and providing cross training opportunities
  • Initiates and fosters a spirit of cooperation with union members by understanding and following the employee handbook as well as the terms of the collective bargaining agreement and resolving personnel problems by analyzing data; investigating issues; identifying solutions; and recommending actions

Leadership and Committee Involvement:

  • Facilitates a work environment that supports a safe and healthy culture
  • Advises the Risk Management Director about safety issues related to existing business and ensures compliance with safety-related items; partners to improve safety culture
  • Provides subject matter expertise on safety topics
  • Contributes to the formulation of annual operating and capital budgets for safety; recommends and maintains budgeting and allocation for safety needs based on SMBSC’s established financial guidelines and business planning process
  • Manages the safety committee, Code Blue team (onsite first aid), and ergonomics team

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • 5-7 years of experience in industrial manufacturing
  • 30-hour OSHA certification
  • First aid or emergency responder certification a plus
