Senior Environmental Engineer

Georgia Pacific’s Consumer Products Mill located in Pennington, Alabama is seeking to hire an experienced Environmental Engineer focusing on Air permitting and compliance.  Applicants must possess a current knowledge of rules and regulations, an ability to prepare permit applications for regulatory agencies, provide appropriate training on environmental topics, and maintain strong working relationships with business unit managers and regulatory agencies.  The individual will also be expected to develop and/or implement environmental management systems that are effective in driving environmental excellence for this integrated pulp and paper facility.  

Successful applicant will be responsible for working with project engineering on capital improvement projects, determine compliance path forward, prepare permit applications and regulatory reports in a fast-paced team environment and demonstrate continuous compliance with State, Federal and Corporate regulatory requirements and compliance standards.  The individual will be expected to engage in site auditing and inspections, help employees understand their environmental obligations and maintain a strong working relationship with regulatory agencies and the community.  This position reports to the mill’s Environmental Manager.

Georgia-Pacific’s Naheola Mill located in Pennington, Alabama, is a manufacturing site for the company’s well-known consumer products business. More than 800 employees produce a wide range of products for the consumer business, including Quilted Northern® and Angel Soft® bath tissue, Sparkle® paper towels, and Dixie® napkins, as well as bleached paperboard used in Dixie® paper cups and plates.

The mill is the largest employer in the community and is engaged in supporting community outreach, workforce development and education.  The area is a sportsman’s paradise with world-class hunting for deer, turkey and other small game and is bounded on the east by the Tombigbee River which provides such recreation as freshwater fishing, boating and water skiing.  Residents of this area enjoy the mild climate, a low cost of living, and is an easy drive to the many resort communities and soft white-sand beaches of the Gulf Coast.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:
Expectations of the position include at a minimum the following:

  • Monitor emerging air compliance issues and keep environmental manager and mill manager apprised of key compliance obligations.
  • Prepare and/or coordinate air permit applications for the mill in cooperation with division, corporate, and outside resources.
  • Work closely with mill leadership team to evaluate capital improvement projects, management system to clearly document environmental reviews, and develop strategies for compliance with air construction and operating permit requirements.
  • Interact with state and EPA to facilitate air permit approvals and authorizations in a timely fashion.
  • Participates in internal and external environmental and management system audits with continuous improvement in mind.

What You Will Need:
Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, Chemical, or Civil Engineering or engineering or science discipline.
  • Eight (8) or more years of recent air compliance experience in a manufacturing industry.
  • Ability to work extended hours and/or rotational week-ends

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Air permitting experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of other environmental regulations is a preferred.
  • Working knowledge of prevention of significant deterioration (PSD) and other regulations is a plus.
