Senior Associate Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

To lead Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) departmental environmental, laboratory safety and chemical hygiene programs. Reporting to the Director, provides strategy and vision to senior leadership and is second in command, responsible for leading and managing the EH&S office, in the absence of the Director.

  • Wide and comprehensive knowledge of occupational and environmental regulations, professional standards and best practices in laboratory safety (i.e. OSHA, CDC/NIH, EPA, DOT and related standards).
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal compliance requirements related to hazardous materials, wastewater, fuel management, and emergency preparedness.
  • Strong risk assessment and risk communication skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and presentation skills— able to meet the needs of an educationally and culturally diverse community.
  • Good judgment and poise in potentially stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials as they affect life/fire safety.
  • Ability to respond and help mitigate hazardous materials incidents and wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

Minimum Experience: 

  • Ten or more years of progressively increasing responsibility in environmental health & safety management.
  • Management and supervision of professional, support staff and budget oversight.
  • Demonstrated leadership in field as evidenced by publications, presentations or membership in professional societies. 
  • Bachelor degree in the sciences or the equivalent in education and experience.
  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or other related certifications.
  • Evidence of continuing education in field and acquisition of new knowledge to meet emerging EHS challenges.

Leadership

  • Works strategically to minimize liability and develop regulatory compliance processes around multiple and varied college processes (i.e. research compliance and environmental permitting and compliance).
  • Provides strategic advice and leadership on environmental health and safety issues to institutional leaders. Enables the research and teaching of the College while anticipating and reducing future liability and risks. Develops multiple plans and programs to support and promote safety in teaching, research and service.
  • Oversees EH&S communication and outreach activities within the Dartmouth community and to outside agencies and relevant non-governmental organizations. Works to creatively communicate the EH&S mission and contributions toward teaching and research through multi-media approaches (i.e. print, video, outreach).
  • Develops and maintains critical working relationships with College departments, leadership, faculty and staff. Establishes productive relationships with community, state and federal officials, agencies and relevant non-governmental organizations.

EHS Compliance Programs and Outreach

  • Oversees the laboratory safety program in consultation with the Director of EHS. Identifies priorities, needs, requests resources and establishes systems to reduce risk and ensure compliance.
  • Identifies information, trends, regulations and best practices in laboratory safety to ensure the EHS team can meet Dartmouth’s needs.
  • Develops informational training, electronic tools and resources, policies and procedures to help ensure the safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Identifies and prioritizes chemical and environmental risks across campus using accepted audit and registration methods
  • Oversees laboratory chemical inventory and waste management programs, identify needs, priorities and work to secure required resources. Directs staff and contractors in this area and ensure continuity of services.
  • Serves on campus environmental health and safety committees as designated.
  • Ensures Dartmouth’s environmental management systems are compliant with local, state and federal permitting agencies and develop systems to ensure permit compliance and minimize liability and support operations.
  • Oversees wastewater, fuel storage, PCB/Lead/Asbestos and regulated materials in construction programs.
  • Integrates environmental programs into other EHS programs to improve compliance oversight and efficiency. Ensure cross-functional development of the EHS and Dartmouth team.
  • Identifies opportunities for the College to become a leader in sustainability and work with the Dartmouth Sustainability Project, the Energy Group and others to advance shared goals.

Staff and Fiscal Management

  • Coordinates with the EH&S Director, working with minimum supervision and supervises EH&S staff as directed to create a high performance collaborative team.
  • Addresses staff/management issues relevant to assigned staff employees and contract staff. This may include scheduling, diversity, team building practices, hiring, discipline, and performance evaluations.
  • Works with the Director of EH&S to support appropriate fiscal, procurement, and resource administration within area of responsibility.
  • Serves as a role-model, advocate, and mentor to direct reports and staff. Creates and sustains an environment that fosters teamwork, excellence, respect, accountability and diversity.
