Safety Specialist

The Safety Specialist is responsible for working with all team members at the New Glarus location to maintain a world class safety organization, where safety is highly valued and safe behaviors are consistently applied. This includes implementation of all company injury prevention activities, OSHA required compliance programs and other behavioral based safety programs as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to the following.  Perform any and all other duties that may be assigned.

  • Work with Sr. Safety Manager to implement all aspects of Safety Links, the company safety program.
  • Ensure compliance with all OSHA and other Federal, State and Local safety rules and regulations.
  • Oversee team members who conduct compliance and safety audits at the plant.
  • Lead a facility wide behavioral based safety program.
  • Create strategies that build awareness and create enthusiasm around safety.
  • Create, deliver, and train team members on important and required safety topics
  • Educate department managers, supervisors and leads on safety topics so they are able to deliver safety training and coaching in their respective departments.
  • Work with managers and supervisors to identify root causes of work related injuries and illnesses and implement methods to eliminate causes.
  • Serve on safety pillars as required in the Jack Links Performance System.
  • Attend training and seminars on current Health and Safety regulations and Programs.
  • Work with Workers Compensation Manager to coordinate light duty and transitional duties for injured and recovering team members.
  • Assist supervisors and managers with team member coaching related to unsafe acts.
  • Provide the resources, education and tools to empower leads, supervisors and managers to take responsibility for safety in their departments.
  • Suggest improvements to existing programs; continuously improve the quality of all support activities.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Knowledge of OSHA Safety Programs and experience in safety or safety-related field.  Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint is required.  Bilingual English/Spanish is desirable.  Previous experience in food manufacturing highly desirable. 

Skills – Language/Communication/Mathematical/Reasoning
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively on a phone and other team members.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to create and interpret graphs and charts.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to sit and talk/hear.  The team member frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The team member is occasionally required to stand and walk.  The team member must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
