General Responsibilities:
Implementation and administration of the organization’s safety program to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment.  Responsibilities include developing, implementing and administering safety training programs / classes, inspecting company facilities / job sites, ensuring compliance with organizational policies / practices and legal regulations.  This role requires 70% field work and 30% office work

Essential Job Functions:

  • Recommends, implements and administers approved safety policies, procedures and programs in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Recommends, implements and conducts safety training programs and classes to train managers and employees in work site safety practices and policies to include: PPE, Lock-out / Tag-out, defensive driving, flagger, confined spaces, trenching & shoring; fire prevention, correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials, etc.
  • Inspects organization facilities, operations, job sites, work functions and equipment to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, to include environment and ergonomic conditions and determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  • Facilitates the investigation of accidents and injuries; root cause analysis and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.  Implements policies and procedures to help prevent reoccurrence. 
  • Monitors and enforces safety regulations, ensuring polices are followed and provides guidance on safety related corrective (disciplinary) actions. 
  • Conducts Industrial Hygiene monitoring of hazards including noise and chemical exposure and works to minimize exposure.
  • Compiles and submits accident reports required by management and regulatory
  • Agencies to include all OSHA required programs.
  • Provides information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
  • Develops and monitors metrics to support and drive safety performance in the organization. 
  • Coordinates and co-leads company-wide Safety & Risk Management Committee.
  • May assists in the administration of the organization’s worker’s compensation and liability insurance programs. 
  • Develops, recommends and coordinates company-wide emergency response plans as related to employee health and safety such as flu pandemic, emergency evacuations, etc.
  • Acts as an advisor to management on safety related issues.
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
  • Maintains accurate and complete files and other safety related information for employees regarding safety & health.
  • Will be required to work an on-call schedule outside of normal schedule on a rotating basis as directed. (i.e. safety accident, property claim).
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • A degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Safety Engineering or related field preferred.   

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in safety field. 
  • Strong knowledge and experience implementing and administering safety practices and procedures in an organizational setting (construction, manufacturing or utility setting preferred).
  • Experience in interpreting various federal, state and local safety laws and regulations as they pertain to the Organization (i.e. O.S.H.A., N.F.P.A., D.O.T., D.O.L., etc).
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting safety training classes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and problem solving skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills; excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.  
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details is a must. 
  • Strong PC and project management skills.
  • Experience working with a risk information management system preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Certified Safety Professional (must obtain within 12 months of eligibility)
  • First-Aid & CPR certification (must obtain within in 6 months of date of hire)
