The Safety and Leaves Manager has oversight over the 7 states within the Mountain West Group and manages the Club’s risk mitigation efforts to support the company and ensure absence management, safety and workers compensation practices and procedures throughout AAA are in compliance with Federal, State and local laws and regulations: to provide our employees with a safe and productive work environment.

Essential Functions:
Governance

  • Oversight for  absence management, safety regulatory compliance, Workers Compensation, Risk (including , OSHA and related laws and regulations) relating to all aspects of Club owned fleet (“COF”) vehicles, Club owned auto repair facilities (“COR”), and the Club’s headquarters, retail branch locations, back office and other office facilities.
  • Oversight integration of leaves (i.e. Workman's compensation with FMLA) and integration with other functions (benefits during LOA, payroll). Interacts with Risk Management department and third party administrator for workers compensation claims as it relates to FMLA.
  • Review, update and maintain all LOA policies to ensure legal compliance, ensure proper distribution and integration with all other departments. Creates and delivers training to HR and managers.
  • Manage the Club’s leave of absence administration, workers compensation program, risk and claims management functions, and third party vendors.
  • Plan, develop and implement Safety programs to ensure a safe workplace for all employees, regular follow up with leaders to ensure plans and programs are in place 
  • Develop and implement programs for emergency preparedness, manage building emergencies, fire drills and other related contingency planning activities.
  • Develop and implement best practices for absence management protocol and ensure consistency across Mountain West Group
  • Develop Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) policies and procedures including job hazard standards, tools to identify and establish safety work practices, hazard corrective action, accident investigations, safety communications, training and record keeping.
  • Develop and implement effective safety training programs for managers and employees.
  • Conduct training as needed to ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA standards and to improve focus on safety.

Records Maintenance & Reporting:

  • Coordinate and manage all regulatory reporting requirements to government agencies, including OSHA, EPA, CalEPA, State Board of Equalization and others.
  • Serve as the primary interface with OSHA on all compliance and enforcement actions
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for our leave programs in alignment with government regulation, company policy and Seek legal guidance as needed.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of all OSHA regulations and new equipment and plant layout to ensure safe operations
  • Audits/Safety Inspections
  • Conduct Safety Compliance audits and Gap Analysis throughout Mountain West group , to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Coordinate with Local, State, and Federal officials during agency inspections and other requests.
  • Investigate work-related injuries and illnesses, implement actions that prevent re-occurrence and prepare required reports and record keeping.
  • Develop, generate and present reports to analyze leave data and trends. Update workforce management with LOA status and other information as needed.
  • Implement necessary actions that correct and maintain compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Investigate employee safety complaints, discuss findings and recommend possible solutions in a timely manner.

Knowledge/Skills/Accountabilities:

  • Environmental Health and Safety Program management - Develop or manage Environmental Health and Safety programs that ensure a safe workplace for all employees. (Advanced)
  • Emergency Preparedness - Process of ensuring that an organization has complied with the preventive measures,  is in a state of readiness to contain the effects of a forecasted disastrous event to minimize loss of life, injury, and damage to property,  can provide rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and other services in the aftermath of the disaster, and has the capability and resources to continue to sustain its essential functions without being overwhelmed by the demand placed on them. (Advanced)
  • Risk-mitigation - Identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks followed by application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability of unfortunate events. (Advanced)
  • Vendor management - Create and monitor vendor relationships. Negotiating and monitoring the length and substance of contracts. Stay up to date on new technologies. Maintain contact with current vendors and reaching out to new vendors.  Supervise and direct the work of assigned occupational/leased employees (Advanced)
  • Leave Management - Skilled in the process of handling absences whether they are due to illness or injury. The process often includes absences covered by the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and even workers' compensation.
  • Reporting - Ability to see, understand and act upon data with the goal to enable end-users to see data so that they can analyze it and make it understandable through analysis. Reporting deals with data, while analysis is what turns the data into information.  (Intermediate)
  • Training and Development - Design and conduct training and development programs to improve individual and organizational peformance. May analyze training needs. (Advanced)
  • Safety Inspection - Adept at following formalized and properly documented process of identifying hazards in the workplace. (Advanced)

Education & Experience / Licenses & Certification:

  • Degree in Business, Environmental Studies or related/equivalent EH&S experience. (Required)
  • 10+ years direct professional experience focused on safety, environmental and occupational health (Preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license, certification and licenses (Required)
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Absence Management and Safety legislation and regulations to ensure  compliance within Mountain West Group.
  • Proven analytical, statistical, organizational and communication and presentation skills. (Preferred)
  • Experience implementing OSHA standards. (Preferred)
