Occupational Safety Specialist - Alabama River Cellulose

This position focuses on managing and developing compliance systems across the mill and supporting the Operations Excellence Teams through the effective integration of health and safety concepts. The Occupational Safety Specialist position reports directly to the Safety & Health Leader.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes: 

  • Provide leadership and direction to achieve the safety & health vision through management commitment and employee ownership 
  • Ensures the facility safety vision remains evergreen, describes the vision of a better state, and that employee objectives are connected to the vision
  • Facilitate the organization’s safety & health ownership through integration of the safety & health management system
  • Assist with the development and utilization of risk assessment methods/systems for anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazards 
  • Assist employees in aligning to a vision of lower risk tolerance / preference
  • Assist facility leadership with the development of short and long-term safety & health objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that identify critical hazards, prioritize, and mitigate risks
  • Assist with the evaluation, interpretation, and compliance with safety and health laws, regulations and permits as it relates to the operation of the facility
  • Provide a good foundation and solid understanding of Georgia-Pacific safety and health standards and all OSHA and Federal and State regulations
  • Manage the mill industrial hygiene programs.  These elements include HazCom, respiratory protection, asbestos, radiation and industrial hygiene monitoring
  • Facilitate the development, improvement, and implementation of training systems and effectively conduct training to the mill population of over 500 employees
  • Participate with facility leaders during agency inspections
  • Identifies and deploys incentive metrics that are performance based (i.e. leading indicators) in addition to outcome based (i.e. trailing indicator)
  • Supports the process safety and chemical process safety programs
  • Create, administer, and update the site-specific safety program
  • Assist project teams in the preparation of site-specific safety programs
  • Communicate all Company safety initiatives to ensure the highest level of awareness
  • Assist project teams in planning safety into upcoming activities
  • Ensure there are competent people on site as required for existing and upcoming site conditions
  • Regularly visit all projects in the area of responsibility
  • Model safe work practices, including wearing of personal protective devices
  • Correct any safety violations immediately, and report any major or systemic violations to the responsible site supervisor
  • Enforce the site-specific safety plan
  • Observe work habits of employees and subcontractors and provide on-the-spot training to correct unsafe work habits. Give feedback to project supervisors and RSM
  • Enforce compliance with GP safety policies, OSHA, and other safety regulations with both GP employees and subcontractors
  • Conduct subcontractor safety preconstruction meetings
  • Ensure the Company’s safety policies and procedures are being applied consistently across all projects under responsibility
  • Conduct job site inspections and prepare reports to supervisors and subcontractors
  • Investigate unsafe acts and enforce disciplinary procedures as determined by the Safety Review Committee
  • Investigate accidents, prepare reports for review and distribute reports to appropriate recipients
  • Ensure OSHA inspections are conducted properly and in accordance with company policies
  • Generate Safety Audit reports and evaluations for distribution to project teams and project executives
  • Conduct safety record audits
  • Conduct required project safety training
  • Identify project training needs and deliver safety training
  • Support the Mill in achieving its targets for EHS, Quality, Costs, Reliability and Production
  • Support the Mill through the use of the Risk Management System
  • Provide technical support in development and implementation of compliance systems & programs
  • Identify opportunities to improve leading and lagging indicators

What Will You Need?
Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety or Associates Degree in Occupational Safety with ASP/CSP certification
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an Industrial Facility in Safety or Graduate of the Georgia-Pacific ELP Program
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and compliance regulations
  • Knowledgeable on Risk Management concepts and tools
  • Experience developing regulatory compliance programs and training
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends
  • Experience working as part of a multifunctional team and performing work with minimal supervision and guidance

What Will Put You Ahead?
Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Associate Safety Professionals (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in EHS Management Systems
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) such as using Word to create and modify Word documents and using Excel to create and modify spreadsheets and using PowerPoint to prepare and present PowerPoint presentations
