Manager - Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) and Facilities

Manage the development, planning and implementation of environmental, occupational health, and safety programs within the organization.  Manage the maintenance for all equipment, machinery and buildings in or on the company’s campus. 

Primary Responsibilities:    

  • Maintain and update, as needed, occupational health and safety policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, biohazards, chemical safety, waste management, inspections, and ergonomics.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct training on various topics, including injury & illness prevention, hazard communication, chemical hygiene, spill response, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials handling/disposal and emergency response.,
  • Advise Sr. Management team of changes to regulations when appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local health and safety regulations and laws.
  • Serve as primary contact with the appropriate government agencies
  • Serve as primary contact with the appropriate outside vendors.
  • Ensure budgeting, scheduling, and staffing requirements are met.
  • Work cooperatively with research and development staff and facilities staff to develop realistic & workable solutions to compliance issues.
  • Oversee and review various computer databases such as training, medical surveillance records and chemical inventory.
  • Participate and lead Emergency Response Team.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
     

Facilities: 

  • Manage day-to-day operations, repair and maintenance of facilities – including, but not limited to, lab equipment, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security and fire life safety systems.   
  • Perform or coordinate necessary repairs to buildings and systems where applicable;
  • Budget and schedule facility modifications and maintenance including estimates on equipment, labor, materials and other related costs.
  • Maintain/create SOP’s relating to operation of utility and equipment systems as well as routine maintenance, calibration and certification coordination of such systems;
  • Perform periodic maintenance according to SOP’S;
  • Coordinate/set up maintenance and service agreements to ensure optimization of all building services;.
  • Provide oversight of lab equipment maintenance and calibration activity
  • Responsible for providing regular communication to all employees as it pertains to facilities related issues, observations or complaints.
  • Provide direction and supervision to staff and service related vendors.
  • Prioritize work orders and ensure timely resolution and follow-up
  • Respond to after-hours calls as needed
  • Perform other related duties as required.
     

Qualifications/Requirements/Skills:  

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a scientific discipline (i.e. microbiology, virology, biological sciences), or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in occupational safety, biological safety, industrial hygiene and/or hazardous material and waste management.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • Outside certifications (CIH, CHMM or CBSP) are preferred.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Strong customer focus skills.
  • Organizational and project management skills (timelines and contractor/vendor coordination).
  • Flexible; ability to adapt changing priorities.
  • Team oriented.
  • Strong management, coaching and mentoring skills.
