Position Summary:

Reporting to the Regional Manager, the Health Safety and Environmental (HSE) Coordinator will perform duties related to the management and administration of the Upstream Minerals (UM) Division’s Health, Safety and Environmental programs in the United States. The HSE Coordinator is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations.

The HSE Coordinator will provide a technical and advisory service to US facilities in the UM network of mineral assay laboratories and sample preparation facilities on assigned health and safety program area(s), such as chemical health and safety and occupational health and safety.

The HSE Coordinator will monitor compliance with regulations, codes, policies and procedures and report on the HSE performance of each Upstream Minerals location in the US to the UM QHSE head office based in Vancouver, Canada.

The position is based in Sparks, NV and requires travel for the purpose of inspection, auditing, training and industrial hygiene sampling.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor compliance with applicable regulations, codes, policies and procedures, through inspections and audits of facilities and their equipment, work areas, work practices, and collect appropriate data and records.
  • Liaise with external agencies and government bodies on inspections and matters related to environmental health and safety.
  • Coordinate the hazardous waste management program including the collection, handling, storage, disposal and transportation of hazardous waste generated by laboratory locations. Maintain records of waste disposal activities.
  • Coordinate the medical monitoring program and maintain appropriate records.
  • Respond to emergencies involving hazardous incidents to aid in remediation efforts on-site, as required.
  • Act as an internal investigator for HSE-related incidents, submit written reports and provide recommendations.
  • Perform risk assessments for hazards associated with new work activities and review existing risk assessments to ensure continuing suitability of controls.
  • Advise management regarding appropriate environmental health and safety procedures, controls, codes, regulations, and policies regarding proposed work activities, renovations, construction or changes with potential impact on environmental health and safety.
  • Operate, maintain and calibrate a variety of complex scientific equipment for HSE monitoring and testing purposes.
  • Review documents and sites of proposed facility construction or renovations of company-owned or leased buildings to assure regulatory compliance and maintain mandated data, records, and reports.
  • Participate in the development of safety guidelines, safe work procedures and related environmental health and safety communications and educational information.
  • Coordinate and present technical training programs in general safety training and/or specialty areas for staff and management, as required by regulations, company policy or directive.
  • Serve on safety committees as requested.
  • Participate in institutional professional development and training.
  • Comply with company policies, procedures and directives.
  • Comply with ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 management system requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related Science discipline and two years of experience in the health, safety and environmental or related field.


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Language skills to include proficiency in reading, writing and communicating in English. Written and verbal knowledge of Spanish is considered an asset.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with management and staff alike and communicate HSE policies and procedures.
  • Effective organization and time management skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and associated software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe.
  • Knowledge of applicable HSE laws, regulations, standards and guidelines related to general industry.
  • Knowledge of physical and chemical hazards found in the chemical testing laboratory environment.
  • Ability to wear and use appropriate PPE as necessary.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the HSE program.
