Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

Job Summary:
Direct the development and implementation of safety, health and environmental initiatives for multiple transloading sites. Some services provided among the sites include, railcar loading, switching, automobile shuttle, bulk loading, unloading, railcar maintenance/repair, and vehicle inspection. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the development, implementation and compliance of safety programs and work procedures associated with federal, state, and local regulations and company policies. Analyze, summarize, and report all necessary EHS data. 
  • Prepare, implement, and review EHS manuals, programs, procedures, and standards. 
  • Provide status updates and recommendations to management on program and policy development for safety, quality, and environmental compliance programs. 
  • Develop safety communication/reporting processes and safety strategies and oversee their implementation. 
  • Maintain effective communication with all levels of employees, management and applicable federal and local regulatory agencies and consultants. 
  • Coordinate audits and agency inspections. 
  • Provide technical or resource assistance to management when called on for assistance. 
  • Permitting- research needs, identify conditions, prepare applications, manage compliance with permit conditions, and resolve issues. 
  • Advise commercial/sales staff regarding EHS implications associated with storage and transfer of new commodities. 
  • Implement and support SQE (Safety, Quality, and Environmental) initiatives and directives across the region. 
  • Lead analyst and evaluation of compliance issues related to operations and development/implement corrective action to resolve potential problems. 
  • Provide support in the development and implementation of JHA’s (Job Hazard Analyses) for both routine (operation and maintenance) and non-routine tasks. 
  • Liaison with regulatory and other external parties. 
  • Assist with investigation for significant incidents. Assist with determining root cause and corrective actions. 
  • All other duties as assigned. 


Requirements:
BS degree or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years experience in the Environmental Health and Safety field, preferably with a background in train services and railroad safety.

Skills, Licenses, Certification, and/or Special Training: 

  • Knowledge in FRA railroad rules and regulations.
  • Ability to develop teaching resources, such as presentations, checklists and other items to develop and enhance associate safety and rules competence.
  • Must be proficient in the use of email, and computers and in Word, Excel, Adobe, PowerPoint, and other software commonly employed to develop presentations and educational materials.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work with federal, state and local agencies, regulators, field and office staff, railroad officials, potential clients and existing clients.
  • Must be able to receive, understand, and communicate specific instructions.
  • One or more of the following certifications are a plus: CSP, CSM, ASP, OSHA 30, MSHA, OHST Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 


This is a full-time, salary, non exempt position that typically works in-excess of 40-hours per week and based out of our corporate office in Louisville, KY. This position will report directly to the General Manager of the assigned region and must have the ability to respond immediately to emergency or work related calls.

Travel: Routine travel is expected for this position (40 – 60%).

Conditions of Employment: Employment is conditional, based on a medical examination which includes a drug screen, and an examination to verify candidates can safely perform the essential functions of the job.
