Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

SW IL/St. Louis MO area

Position Summary
Develop, implement, lead and monitor activities related to Safety, Environmental issues, and regulatory affairs to ensure the health and safety of personnel, and compliance with national, state and local laws at chemical plant employing approximately 400 employees and contractors. Direct supervision over 3 EHS and 1 operational professionals. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Active member of the plant leadership team driving accountability for plant safety initiatives and performance reporting to the plant manager. Work directly with corporate HSSE professionals to learn or share best practices throughout the organization, and implement appropriate programs. 
  • Cultivate an inclusive culture focused on continuous improvement in safety performance and personal accountability for safety. Lead and develop the safety department to advocate for all employees to promote engagement and active participation in safety programs. 
  • Formulate, write, and implement facility environmental, safety, health, and regulatory compliance programs. Develop and implement audit processes and procedures to measure compliance, but also continuous improvement at the site to mitigate or eliminate risk in accordance with site or corporate focus initiatives.
  • Research, accumulate, and obtain information and statistical data needed to develop reports which substantiate compliance with regulations in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements. Maintain detailed records on operational activities with regard to safety and environmental issues, concerns, and risk mitigation.
  • Meet and consult with local, state, and federal authorities on regulatory matters to ensure that facility operates in compliance with the appropriate air, water, and hazardous waste permits.
  • Instruct facility personnel regarding local, state, and federal regulations governing environmental, safety, and regulatory issues. Consult with personnel regarding Safety & Regulatory requirements that may apply to proposed projects and/or activities.
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate safety, environmental, and regulatory training for personnel. Develop training programs, secure outside training as necessary, select/recommend sources for training aids and materials as needed. Oversee new employee safety orientations and conduct selected educational safety programs as required.
  • Direct the implementation, maintenance and improvement of the EHS management systems as appropriate for the location and responsibilities of the position. 
  • Training & personnel/career development and interview/selection of new personnel.
  • Develop and control annual budget for assigned area and effectively allocate funds and manpower accordingly.
     

Education and experience required:

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Safety or related science
  • 10+ years’ experience in EHS roles in a chemical industry environment; industrial manufacturing experience will also be considered if other requirements and experience are present
  • Strong background and experience in plant floor health & safety programs
  • Demonstrable experience in impacting safety culture in a positive manner
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) hands-on experience required
  • Demonstrates knowledge and commitment to Responsible Care
  • Demonstrates leadership in teams working across working groups to accomplish team goals
  • Demonstrates innovation and creativity through participation in cross-functional project planning and completion
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop training programs for other group members
  • Able to interact effectively with customers (both internal and external), team members, and members of support groups to promote teamwork and resolve conflict
  • Able to handle multiple projects or assignments effectively
  • Demonstrates sound decision making skills based on personal experience and knowledge, available data, and input from others as appropriate
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills both written and oral, and interpersonal skills such that cross-functional and technical interface is effective
