Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

Craft Brew Alliance has an immediate opening for an EHS Manager, based in Portland, OR.  This position will lead improvement in all functional areas of safety & environmental across the brewery and pubs; take full ownership/initiative in leading the culture change to a proactive mindset. This position is responsible for the Widmer Brothers Brewery and Pub, CBA's corporate offices and the new Redhook Small Batch Brewpub in Seattle.

Specific job duties:

  • Ensures facilities meet state and federal OSHA safety standards and federal/local environmental requirements. 
  • Manages State or OSHA/EPA site inspections.
  • Lead and own all EHS programs such as training, LOTO, electrical safety, HAZCOM, PPE, Air permits, wastewater permits, etc.
  • Assists as a company-wide employee training resource to ensure transfer of knowledge from HR, QA, Production and Warehouse Departments to employees. Support brewery and pub initiatives from other departments.
  • Assists with the development of Standards Operating Procedures for employee job training.
  • Manages all SOP document control activities and the employee training database.
  • Manages/Develops environmental compliance program to ensure facility meets all environmental requirements and regulations.
  • Further develop a behavioral based safety program to address root causes and prevention and unsafe behaviors.
  • Set expectations with leadership and train how to perform proper root cause analysis in incident investigation. Maintain, track and monitor all incidents trending data looking for opportunities and reducing highest risk through data-driven decisions. 
  • Maintain and generate OSHA 300 logs.
  • Benchmark current programs against the Bureau of Labor standards for our industry and develop ways to decrease accident trends for severity, frequency and time loss.
  • Own all safety & environmental record keeping duties.
  • Further develop safety committee into advocates for safety that lead change, implement new programs and capability building for knowledge/emergency response.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources on worker’s compensation claims and selection of light duty job assignments for injured workers. 
  • Implement effective return to work program and establish relationships with medical providers.
  • Helps to maintain Job Analysis for each position within the facility.
  • Works with comp insurer and Managers to seek improvements in workstation design improvements to reduce injury risk.
  • Adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices, Standard Operating Procedures, and Safety/Environmental Regulations consistently.
  • Communicates regularly with Managers, Supervisors, and Leads to act as a resource and ensure safety/environmental goals are met.
  • Communicates regularly with line staff employees in a training capacity regarding safety & environmental issues.
  • Lead, design and own continual improvement projects for safety and environmental compliance.
  • Identifies, prioritizes, coordinates and drives continuous improvement activities for the PDX facility.
  • Conducts root-cause analysis and identifies cost-saving opportunities (packaging efficiencies, energy utilization etc.) and develops and leads corrective action plans to mitigate the probability of reoccurrence.
  • Provides project follow-up to monitor the progress of planned improvement implementation to ensure timely action, appropriate support and achievement of expected tangible benefits.
  • Works closely with operations management to provide coaching opportunities to the staff to identify waste elimination and process improvements.
  • Implement through training and awareness, the pyramid methodology approach to safety with established front line processes for near miss reporting, behavior observations and closed loop feedback through management. 
  • Establish ever-changing metrics to measure success.
     

Position requirements:

  • 4-year degree in OH&S or related field; and/or additional 4 years’ of experience in Safety.
  • 3-5 years leading or coordinating Safety programs in a Lean Manufacturing facility.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Familiarity with OSHA/EPA and OR/WA State rules and regulations.
  • Proven Continuous Improvement responsibilities and results. 
  • Six sigma training or equivalent highly desired.
  • Presentation preparation and delivery to various audiences and the ability to change styles accordingly.
  • Strong sense of accountability and the willingness to maintain the culture we've worked hard to create.
