EHS Coordinator

NAES Corporation has an immediate opening for an experienced Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator at the Newark Energy Center. Located in Newark, NJ, the plant is an environmentally advanced 665 megawatt gas-fired facility utilizing GE 7FA technology. We are looking for someone who is passionate about maintaining environmental and safety excellence in a power plant/regulatory environment. The key responsibilities of this position are focused on environmental activities associated with the plant and the ideal candidate will have multi-media environmental compliance experience.

The EHS Coordinator must ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner resulting in no accidents and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. The EHS Coordinator also implements, coordinates and performs the compliance support functions for plant operations and maintenance to include monitoring, reporting and analysis of plant emissions and environmental performance, plant safety and plant compliance with emergency response and security.

Here's a look at some of the things you'll be doing: 

  • Responsible for providing monitoring, technical direction and oversight for daily operations with regard to all safety, health and environmental compliance including environmental sampling and reporting requirements in compliance with laws, regulations, permits, policies and procedures.
  • Provide support to facility Owner to interface with local environmental regulators to include preparing for and coordinating inspections, responding to information requests, supporting strategies for and negotiations of permit modifications and renewals, and preparing routine compliance reports and communications.
  • Ensure all shipments of waste are properly coordinated and all regulations adhered to.
  • Oversee the safety, health and environmental compliance training of all plant personnel and maintain the plant Safety Manual.
  • Ensure lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, machine guarding, PPE, mechanical integrity program, and chemical safety compliance is understood, followed and properly adhered to.
  • For air emissions and CEMS: monitoring; supports or fulfills the role of CEMS Coordinator or back-up CEMS Coordinator as directed.
  • In accordance with Title V permit requirements enforceable by New Jersey EPA and U.S. EPA, you will be responsible for compiling quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports. This involves monitoring, record-keeping, interpreting data and submitting reports on-time.
  • For waste shipments and water discharge: sampling requirements are completed properly, documented, and reported properly and timely
  • Provide additional supervisory support to enforce safety regulations during outages and operational periods as needed.
  • Review work packages as required for safety conformance.
  • Compile all necessary data, investigates and prepares written reports for any on site accidents following the guidelines provided in the Safety Manual for Accident Reporting.
  • Provides viable alternatives and make economic evaluations related to plant equipment and/or procedures modifications to assure improved plant safety and environmental compliance, including all environmental and other appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain the Environmental QA/QC Manual and ensure compliance with all environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and update the plant safety and environmental records as required.
  • Ensure a complete electronic and hard copy of the reports for historical use.
  • Maintain electronic safety and environmental data management systems.
  • Review all major maintenance expenditures to assure continued compliance with safety and environmental regulations and permits.
  • Provide necessary technical support for all related safety and environmental work for bid specifications, evaluation of vendor/contractor bid proposals and monitoring of contractor work performance to assure contract compliance.
  • Provide relevant inputs to the budgetary process for the necessary improvements for safety and environmental compliance as required.

  • Perform duties related to handling hazardous materials and wastes, spill prevention and control in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Initial orientation and annual classroom training are provided, together with on-the-job-training, to demonstrate understanding of essential information for regulatory compliance and documentation.
     

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Plant Manager and coordinates work activity with the Plant Engineer, Operations Manager, Maintenance Manager and Plant Administrator. Interfaces with contractors and plant personnel for the necessary support and coordination.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: 
Physical requirements include:
Ability to reach, climb, lift (up to 50 pounds), walk, and stop throughout the work day. Possibility of standing on feet for extended periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. 

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status may periodically be required.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences or related field or comparable experience at responsible levels is required.
  • Multi-media environmental compliance experience desired.
  • Five years' experience in environmental compliance for operating facilities is desired, preferably in power plant or power-related industry.
  • General knowledge of power plant operations, including the interrelationship of environmental impacts and compliance with operation and maintenance functions.
  • General knowledge of major environmental legislation involving air, water, hazardous materials and waste management with at least one specialized area of knowledge at the regulatory requirement level.
  • General knowledge of applicable safety statutes and regulations and familiarity with the principles associated with maintaining a strong safety program.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as good planning and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team leader, excellent interpersonal skills and a record of building consensus among internal and external parties.
  • Ability to perform and manage multiple varied tasks in an industrial environment and to identify and analyze potentially complex compliance risks promptly.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and directing varied programs and tasks directly involved with the engineering component of the plant, but directly influencing the entire plant operation.
  • Analyze and interpret data to make sound professional judgments and recommendations.
  • Manage and motivate subordinate members, contribute to team development and deal persuasively and harmoniously with all other managers and plant employees.
