Director, Safety, Health and Environment

Overall Responsibilities:
The Director of Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) will provide Safety, Health, and Environment leadership for all Troy sites worldwide through the development, execution and continuous improvement of programs, processes and initiatives designed to create a safe, healthy and injury-free work environment. 

Reports to: Vice President of Manufacturing & Engineering
Supervises: All dedicated SHE personnel across the world.
Location: One Avenue L, Newark, NJ 07105 - manufacturing site. 

Key Candidate Attributes:

  • Strong knowledge of federal and local SHE regulations, including OSHA, DEP, EPA, and CDC.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of implementing and managing OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) program.
  • Experience managing SHE at sites outside of the United States.
  • Experience negotiating with local government agencies regarding site compliance.
  • Results orientation; high levels of personal initiative, energy and ownership for success.
  • Experience in developing and implementing successful Behavior Based Safety programs to drive the safety culture throughout the organization.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; able to communicate across entire breadth of the organization (shop floor to executive level).
  • Strong team leadership and team facilitation skills; ability to work well across teams and in a matrix organization .
  • Strong project management skills; well organized; demonstrated planning skills.
  • Logical, data driven and independent manager who is able to set clear, measurable objectives for subordinates and drive them to success in achieving them.
  • Acts to generate multiple solution options and make principled recommendations.
     

Major Responsibilities:
Functional Leadership: 

  • Set and achieve measureable, aggressive SHE goals for every facility at Troy within the framework of the Troy Operations System (TOPS).
  • Drive safety consciousness down to the operator level to create a real safety culture at every Troy location.
  • Develop, implement, enforce, and drive the continuous improvement of Troy’s safety, health and environmental policies and processes worldwide to help achieve 1a and 1b.
  • Plan, direct, and implement new corporate policies, procedures, and standards at all sites to help achieve 1a and 1b.
  • Communicate SHE progress, status, and issues to the entire organization; proactively build awareness of SHE at Troy through continuous communication strategies.
  • Lead or participate in all key plant safety and environmental processes alongside local safety leads, including HAZOPS, major safety drills, MOC meetings, batch card and SOP reviews.
     

Program Development and Implementation: 

  • Develop and implement programs to achieve injury free work sites.
  • Drive accountability among all functions to eliminate accidents and injuries; manage programs to achieve a high degree of engagement and ownership at the employee level.
  • Develop and execute initiatives designed to identify, evaluate, prevent, and control environmental, health, and safety hazards at the site.
  • Implement and maintain industrial hygiene programs and standards at all Troy sites.
  • Develop and oversee execution of a comprehensive plant safety training program across all Troy sites.
  • Develop and oversee safety rewards and recognition programs.
  • Develop and oversee a worldwide contractor safety program to ensure proper SHE practices by contractors.
     

Regulatory Compliance: 

  • Ensure compliance with conservation / environmental protection regulations at all Troy sites.
  • Act as the primary interface with regulatory agencies on SHE matters.
  • Conduct and document thorough accident, incident, and “near-miss” investigations, and provide recommendations for process, procedure or equipment improvements to reduce risk.
  • Ensure compliance with all OSHA and other related regulatory requirements for documentation and reporting; conduct or oversee routine audits for all sites related to SHE activities.
  • Administer all required Emergency Evacuation 665drills for headquarters staff; ensure processes are in place for similar drills at all locations.
  • Develop and oversee an annual calendar for all required OSHA safety training.
     

Team Leadership: 

  • Provide direction, set goals and drive the selection and performance review processes for all SHE professionals across all Troy locations.
  • Coach and mentor safety professionals and other key staff to achieve professional growth and improved business performance.
  • Provide leadership and direction for cross-functional safety committees at each site.
  • Work in accordance with all company policies and procedures regarding employment, safety, quality, product safety and legality, security, and regulatory compliance as applicable.
     

Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Environmental or Industrial Hygiene or comparable field required.
  • Minimum 10 years SHE management experience in technical environment similar to Troy in size, complexity, and international character.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills running a function equivalent to Troy’s SHE function.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team that can engineer, oversee construction, and operate fully integrated large-scale specialty chemical plants.
     

ADA Requirements:

  • Travel estimated at 20 – 30% both domestic and international, including Asia.
  • Must be able to wear and use respirator.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders
