Advisor - Environmental Health & Safety (Radiation Safety)

Cardinal Health Nuclear Manufacturing Services is a specialized manufacturing facility that involves the production of radiopharmaceuticals-nuclear drugs-for use in nuclear medicine diagnostic studies.

What Radiation Safety contributes to Cardinal Health
Radiation Safety is responsible for overseeing the safe manufacturing, handling and shipment of radiopharmaceuticals and other drugs to medical care providers under highly regulated State and Federal guidelines in accordance with local, city, state, federal and Company guidelines. Assists in designing, developing and implementing procedures, programs, processes, and systems to ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements and to eliminate or minimize radiation risks to the company, its employees, the environment and the communities in which it does business.

Accountabilities

  • Review, update and write procedures pertaining to radiation safety and EH&S.
  • Implement and manage the EH&S program in accordance with corporate guidelines.
  • Conduct training with all applicable team members for radiation safety and EH&S.
  • Oversee Radio Nucleic Purity (RNP) testing for PET sites.
  • Demonstrates depth and breadth of knowledge in the area of hazard recognition, evaluation and control.
  • Applies working knowledge in the application of concepts, principles, and technical capabilities to perform varied tasks.
  • Perform and adhere to all radiation safety procedures and policies related to the drug product manufacturing process to include but not limited to the following; radioactive waste disposal, radiation contamination surveys and wipe tests, area surveys, package surveys, personnel monitoring, thyroid bioassays, and environmental monitoring.
  • Researches regulatory issues and product development and testing procedures to ensure compliance with appropriate local, state and federal regulatory agencies (NRC, DOT, EPA, etc.)
  • Audits and inspects the facility to ensure compliance with Company, local, state and federal regulations.
  • Participates and responds to investigations of radiological incidents and emergencies and recommends appropriate corrective actions when needed.
  • Identifies possible solutions to a variety of technical problems and takes actions to resolve.
  • Assist with the coordination and management all aspects of the radiation safety program, including radioactive waste processing.
  • Identify potential safety hazards related to radioactive materials.
  • Assists in maintaining the radiation safety instrument program. Arranges and coordinates equipment calibration, maintenance, and repair. Evaluates radiation safety instrument maintenance records. Determines, or assists in determining, appropriate radiological instrumentation required for detection and quantification of specific radioisotopes.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
     

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in related field (Science, Technology, or Engineering), or equivalent work experience, preferred
  • Location: Aurora, CO
  • Hours: M-F 8-4pm or 9-5pm
  • 3+ years experience in related field, preferred
  • Certification: safety or environmental related preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of radiation monitoring instruments and equipment.
  • Experience delivering training, experience in management systems, compliance management, audit or inspection process
  • Good oral and written communication and written skills.
  • Ability to hear, write, and speak clearly in order to communicate.
  • Manual dexterity required for occasional reaching, lifting, bending, kneeling and holding of small objects
  • Holds self and others accountable to high standards; consistently executes daily job duties while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Ability to lift lead containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
     

The primary work environment consists of a manufacturing facility for the production of radiopharmaceuticals, which must be kept clean, orderly, properly lighted and maintained in optimum operating condition. Employees handle radioactive materials and are exposed to very low amounts of radiation that are deemed safe by current standards.

The facility is operated under well-controlled and closely monitored conditions that are regulated by both State and Federal agencies, and that are enforced by the corporate internal quality and regulatory group. Each staff member will receive specific training in keeping radiation exposures within regulatory guidelines and he/she will be routinely monitored for their exposure to radiation. Noise levels are considered low to moderate.
