This program prepares students for employment and/or retraining in the occupational safety and health field. It is designed to train safety and health practitioners, generalists, and paraprofessionals entering the safety and health field. Additionally, this program prepares students for transfer to selected four-year colleges for advanced degrees.
Graduates of this program should be able to:
- Develop and implement safety and health programs for their employers for the protection of people and property;
- Identify and inspect for safety and health hazards in the workplace;
- Locate and research regulatory requirements in safety and health for the workplace;
- Investigate and evaluate accident causes;
- Understand the implications of industrial hygiene in the workplace and the basic application of instrumentation for the recognition and control of health hazards;
- Train and communicate hazard awareness, recognition and control to others.
Graduates should expect to find employment as safety and health technicians, safety and health specialists, accident investigators, and occupational safety and health program staff assistants. Such positions are found in general industry, service organizations, the construction industry, and in loss control organizations. Similar positions are found in federal, state, and local governments.
